Recovery from Wisdom Teeth Removal

Smiling teenage girlYour wisdom tooth will typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. If there is enough room behind your second molars, the last adult teeth will erupt without any issues. However, if there is crowding or teeth misalignments, the wisdom tooth may pose several problems.

An impacted wisdom tooth is a condition where the third back molars fail to emerge properly due to lack of space. Our dentist at Chicago Dental Esthetics, may recommend surgery to remove the wisdom tooth and prevent problems in the future. The procedure and recovery time often depends on your specific case.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth Removal Procedure

Wisdom teeth removal is a common procedure that usually takes place in an outpatient setting. The patient arrives for the surgical process and can leave on the same day. Your specific case will determine if you will receive local or general anesthesia during the procedure.

If you have a cyst or infection, it may be necessary to address such issues before undergoing the procedure. Some patients require bone grafting to restore the function of the jawbone and prevent tooth loss. However, complications can increase the time it takes to complete the procedure and may lengthen the recovery period.

Recovery from Wisdom Tooth Procedure

You will receive information on what foods to eat and how to maintain oral hygiene to prevent infections. Restricting your diet to soft foods will be crucial for your recovery, especially within the first few weeks. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, hard nuts, and sugary drinks to avoid complications.

Most people can go back to their daily activities within three to four days after the procedure. A more extensive procedure may require up to one week of rest to recover.

You may experience a sore jaw and swollen cheeks in the first week of recovery. However, you should be able to open your mouth completely without discomfort within seven to 10 days. Discomfort on the side of your cheeks should go away after two weeks.

Self-Care Tips for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Self-care is crucial for recovery after the wisdom teeth removal procedure. Adhere to the dental hygiene regimen to avoid problems that may extend the recovery period and cause complications.

You may gently swish the wound with an antiseptic mouthwash in 24-hour intervals. But you should avoid spitting as the pressure may dislodge the clot and open the wound. After swishing with a mouthwash, open your mouth and let the water fall out without spitting.

Consider using an extra pillow to avoid exerting pressure on the affected side of the mouth. Undue pressure around the site can open the wound and cause more discomfort. Using a straw could also dislodge the stitches and open the wound.

Self-care and Pain Management After the Procedure

You may also receive instructions on how to manage pain and swelling after the procedure. You can use an ice pack to reduce swelling on the side of the face. However, it is not advisable to use ice directly on the face. It may lead to an ice burn, a condition where a cold object can cause damage to the skin tissue. Wrapping the ice with a piece of cloth can reduce the risk of an ice burn.
