Periodontal Care

A healthy tooth compared to a tooth with periodontal diseasePeriodontal maintenance is a dental service that involves frequent appointments for treating periodontitis. Periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease that leaves behind irreversible gum damage as it progresses, which makes treating it quickly a high priority for our team at Chicago Dental Esthetics.

How Important Is Periodontal Maintenance?

Periodontal maintenance involves removing a large amount of built-up plaque and preventing it from forming in the future. Because periodontal disease compromises both the teeth and gums to the point where bacteria grow faster than normal, frequent appointments are required to keep an eye on the condition and provide thorough cleanings. The main part of periodontal maintenance appointments involves root scaling, a procedure that involves removing plaque from the teeth and the pockets below the gumline. The large concentration of plaque below the gumline is the main cause of continued gum infection, so removing the embedded plaque is important in the step towards treating the condition. Periodontitis does not only involve the gums; teeth often show signs of decay, leaving rough patches where bacteria can hide and continue their damage. Root scaling smooths these patches to slow down plaque growth on the teeth. Antibiotics also play an important role in periodontal maintenance. Antibiotics will help reduce the number of harmful bacteria in the patient’s mouth.

How Often Should You See Us For Periodontal Maintenance?

Depending on the severity of the condition, the patient may be required to have periodontal maintenance every 3 months with the frequency varying depending on how the patient’s oral health is after the appointments. Periodontal maintenance is an effective step towards treatment, solid oral health care at home is equally as important.

Caring For Your Oral Health In Between Visits

Recovery will go significantly faster for patients practicing excellent oral hygiene at home in between their visits. Brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and rinsing with an antibacterial mouthwash will improve the rate at which the condition can be treated. This regimen prevents the buildup of plaque, which will prevent further damage to the gums and teeth. Great oral hygiene also involves eating right. Sugars and starches contribute to increased plaque development. Therefore, patients should limit the consumption of food and beverages such as potato chips, candy, and soda. Our team recommends a diet with plenty of fresh produce - especially dark leafy greens such as kale and spinach which are known for their abundance of calcium for promoting strong teeth. Patients who are coming in for their periodontal maintenance appointments as scheduled and taking care of their oral hygiene at home are far more likely to have their periodontitis treated. After treatment, our professionals can discuss repairing the damages done to the gums. While recessed gums cannot grow back on their own, procedures such as gum graft surgery can help patients restore their teeth gums, and smile.
