Oral Appliance Therapy

Woman sleeping in a white bedTreating mild cases of sleep apnea can be non-invasive and simple through the application of oral appliance therapy. At Chicago Dental Esthetics, our team can provide custom-made oral appliances that will help you get a peaceful night of deep sleep.

Oral Appliance Therapy Is a Simple Solution To a Big Problem

Sleep apnea is caused by excessive throat tissue that closes in on the airway when a person falls asleep. This leads to both snoring and not being able to reach a deep state of sleep. Sleep apnea affects approximately 22 million Americans, making it a common phenomenon. Fatigue and snoring are not the only symptoms sleep apnea causes. Sleep apnea often leads to dry mouth because the person sleeps with their mouth open, drying out the mouth and allowing harmful bacteria to spread. Risk factors for sleep apnea include excess weight, thick necks, narrow airways, being male, being older, having a family history of sleep apnea, drinking alcohol, smoking, nasal congestion, application of narcotic painkillers, and a variety of health conditions such as high blood pressure. It is important to take note of persistent symptoms that could point towards the condition.

Fortunately, oral appliance therapy is an easy solution and can effectively treat sleep apnea for many people. The most common oral appliance is a mouthguard. A mouthguard made for sleep apnea is different from a sports or night-time mouthguard to prevent teeth grinding. This mouthpiece pushes the lower jaw forward, which helps the airway in the throat stay open. This allows for storing and allowing the person to get enough oxygen in their sleep. The next oral appliance is known as a tongue retainer, which holds the tongue in place to prevent it from falling backward and closing the airway in the throat. This is an effective tool for those who sleep on their backs.

Cost of Oral Appliance Therapy

The cost of oral appliance therapy is typically lower than the assessment for surgery. A custom mouthguard is approximately $1900, which includes both the appointments and the appliance itself. Tongue retainers are substantially lower in cost, but tongue retainers are not for everyone. Consult our team about what options are best for you. Sleep apnea cases vary from person to person. What can work well for one person may not work for another. Our team wants you to be successfully treated. If you are experiencing problems with your oral appliance, contact us so our professionals can run diagnostic tests.
