How Long Does Invisalign Take?

Teenage girl holding her clear alignerInvisalign is a popular alternative for straightening teeth compared to traditional metal braces. Clear aligners are not only invisible, but they are also convenient for most teens and adults. They are convenient since you can take the aligners off when eating or brushing your teeth.

The duration may vary depending on your oral health profile. At Chicago Dental Esthetics, we have earned a reputation for commitment to the highest standards of dental care. You can rely on our orthodontics team for optimal outcomes after your Invisalign treatment.

How Long Does Invisalign Take to Straighten teeth?

Invisalign is a clear aligner that shifts the teeth gradually to their original position. While the duration may vary, you can expect straightening teeth with Invisalign to take between 12 and 18 months. Sometimes Invisalign can reverse minor teeth misalignments in about six months.

Complicated cases of teeth misalignments can take up to two years to treat. Some patients with crooked teeth may require metal braces or additional orthodontic devices to address misalignments.

Why Does the Duration Vary?

Each patient has a unique oral cavity profile. The treatment varies depending on your specific dental requirements. Several factors will determine the duration of your treatment. The longer distance the teeth shift, the more time it will take to correct misalignments.

Aging may also play a role in the duration of the treatment process. Your gum tissues are more pliable when you are younger. The gums become less responsive to pressure as you grow older.

Invisalign is not always the best solution for older patients. The pressure from Invisalign could be insufficient to move the teeth to the desired position. Metal braces are often the best solution for such cases.

Some physiological factors may influence the movement of teeth during treatment. Some patients will require more time than others. Treatment is also faster for patients who commit to keeping the aligners on for at least 22 hours per day.

What to Expect From the Treatment

Our orthodontists will evaluate your oral health before customizing your Invisalign treatment. A scanner captures a 3D model to determine the distance the teeth will move.

A computer model can analyze the malocclusions in your oral cavity. The profile of these malocclusions will determine the best treatment option for your case. It may also determine the length of treatment.

The data from your diagnosis facilitates the fabrication of the clear aligners. A 3D computer model is more accurate than a traditional scan. It ensures the Invisalign aligners conform to the shape of your teeth and gums.

You will receive replacement aligners every two weeks. Since your teeth are shifting, the new aligners ensure the movement matches your dental profile. The process is repeated until your teeth return to their original position.

Our team will generate a 3D image to show you how your teeth will look after treatment. You can discuss your concerns and expectations during the recovery period. Commit to follow-up visits to ensure you address oral health problems on time.
