Dentures vs. Dental Implants

3D rendering of partial dentures being placed on a lower jaw with missing back teeth Dentures and implants are some of the options to replace one or more missing teeth. Every treatment has its advantages and disadvantages. The ideal solution will depend on your oral health and preferences.

At Chicago Dental Esthetics, our dentist will perform a thorough diagnosis and discuss each option in detail. Our team can recommend alternatives depending on your needs. You can rely on our dental specialist to deliver the best treatment to boost your oral health.

What Are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth that can replace a whole set of teeth on the upper or lower jaw. Partial dentures are another type of prosthetic to replace only a few missing teeth.

Dentures can mimic the look of gums and teeth. An adhesive holds the dentures in place to facilitate chewing and speech. Our dentist will take an impression of your teeth to ensure an accurate fit for optimum comfort.

What Are Implants?

An implant is a prosthetic tooth root implanted into the jawbone. It is often used to replace a missing tooth. The post is made from titanium which fuses with the jawbone. Unlike dentures, it requires a healthy jawbone with adequate volume. Our dentist will fit an abutment after the post fuses with the bone.

A crown that complements your teeth color is fitted on the abutment. Some patients may require a bone grafting procedure to boost jawbone volume.

Which One Should You Choose?

Several factors may influence your choice between dentures and implants. Dentures require more maintenance than implants. You must remove them before bed and soak them in a cleaning solution.

Implants typically require regular good dental hygiene to maintain them. They also strengthen the jawbone and prevent resorption. The implant’s post stimulates the jawbone, which limits the effect of bone deterioration.

Bone deterioration can have far-reaching implications for your dental health. They can change the shape and structure of the face, making you look decades older. You may lose teeth since they do not have a stable base.

Another problem with dentures is they can affect your taste and bite function. It may take time to get accustomed to the feeling of dentures in your mouth. Dentures also affect speech since it can be difficult to pronounce certain words correctly.

Dentures can cause mouth irritation, especially if you skip the required hygiene routine. Your face may change its shape due to the absence of jawbone stimulation. The dentures can loosen, causing clicking sounds and discomfort.

However, implants are more expensive than dentures, and the treatment process is longer. If your bone needs grafting, it may take about six months before affixing the implant to your jawbone.

Dentures do not require an incision into your gums therefore they have a much shorter recovery time. They are also very cost-effective when it comes to artificial teeth options.

Our dental team offers odor and stain-resistant flexible dentures. Flexible dentures do not require sealants to hold the prosthetic in position. That is beneficial for people who are allergic to dental adhesives. However, it is wise to consult our dentist before making a choice.
