Dental Exam

Woman getting a dental examOur team of professionals at Chicago Dental Esthetics is here to help you keep or oral health in shape. There are many problems that cannot be detected by our patients. Even seemingly-healthy mouths can harbor problems such as cavities and gum disease. One example is gum disease in smokers, where the chemicals in cigarettes or e-cigs render the gum disease asymptomatic. It is because of these problems – both evident and hidden – that our team encourages all patients to have an exam with us every 6 months. It may seem unnecessary at first, but routine check-ups can help prevent oral health issues, and they can catch any potential problems early to prevent them from getting worse.

Exams Are Highly Beneficial For Your Smile

The main goal of a dental exam is to check for oral health problems such as gingivitis, periodontitis, and gum pockets. A patient may have come in for their routine visit or decided to schedule the appointment because something is bothering them such as a toothache or inflamed gums. Our professionals will look for tooth decay and other potential oral problems with an x-ray scan. This will clearly point out to our team if you have any cavities, impacted wisdom teeth, or other issues that may be hard or even impossible to see with eyes alone.

A typical exam will also check for bite alignment, provide cleaning, and gather information on your risks of developing oral health problems in the future. Expect to be asked questions about any potential habits you have such as smoking and heavy alcohol consumption. It is important to answer honestly so our team is able to provide the care you need. Our professionals may also perform an oral cancer screening depending on your risk factors. Our team checks inside the mouth for every patient to spot oral cancer. After your appointment, Our team will discuss with you the current state of your oral health and what you can be doing at home for self-preventative care. If our professionals have found any oral health problems during the exam, our team will schedule a follow-up visit for treatment.

Having Positive Check-Ups Can Save You Time(and money)

Practicing good oral hygiene during the 6 months leading to an exam will lead to shorter visits which can result in fewer expenses. Professional cleanings will take less time when there is less plaque and tartar for our team to remove. And whereas some variants of gum disease are asymptomatic, healthy-looking gums are an encouraging sign of excellent oral health. Ensure you are brushing twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste and flossing at least once per day - this will go a long way along with a healthy diet full of fresh produce and less sugar and starches.

If you would like to schedule an appointment with our team at Chicago Dental Esthetics, you can call our office at (224) 341-5162. Our team will schedule an appointment where our professionals can run diagnostic tests on your mouth and propose a treatment plan for your oral health.
