CEREC Crown Skokie, IL
Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) crowns are a relatively new form of delivering quality dental crowns to patients in just a single visit. Normally a crown can take up to 3 weeks to be created and fitted. However, CEREC crowns use computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to allow us at Chicago Dental Esthetics to create the crowns and fit them into the patient in a single afternoon.
How CEREC Crowns Work
The process of creating a CEREC crown is efficient and is possible thanks to the powerful computers available to us. First, the tooth will be scanned to collect the necessary data required for the creation of the crown. Once an accurate impression has been gathered for the computer, it will then begin the process of creating the crown. It will carve out an accurately sized crown based on the data given using a block of ceramic. After the crown has been created, additional shading is done to ensure it matches the patient’s surrounding teeth.
Are There Any Downsides?
People are oftentimes surprised that such a service exists, but it is used in dentist offices across the U.S and has worked wonders for many patients. Functionality wise, a crown created from CAD/CAM will be identical to an all-ceramic crown created the traditional way, but the difference of course is that you receive the crown much faster. With that said, crowns made of metal cannot be created this way, including porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns which are considered one of the best dental crowns for their combined durability and aesthetics.
Additionally, while this isn’t a fault of the technology itself, there are still offices that have not adopted the practice of CEREC crowns yet, which can limit who has access to these crowns. Purchasing equipment and ensuring staff is properly trained to use it takes both a large amount of time and money and many dentist offices simply don’t feel the need to adopt it just yet. If you are interested in a crown you can have as quickly as possible, you can be assured we are able to deliver!
Are CEREC Crowns Expensive?
This service sounds like it would have a pretty big markup in cost compared to a crown made the conventional way. However, the good news is that the cost is only marginally higher. Unfortunately, cosmetic dentistry isn’t typically covered by insurance, and as such, should be something that is taken into consideration when deciding to wait for a crown or receiving it immediately. For some people, they are in a situation where they absolutely need their new crown as soon as possible while others are fine with waiting the extra few weeks.
